You wouldn’t believe it to look at me, but I am a huge fan and occasional supporter of what is termed ‘Urban Art.’ I have a lot of admiration and respect for people who are passionate about what they believe in and go to great lengths to make the average person sit up and think..as nowadays thinking is becoming as old fashioned as the Penny Farthing.
I was very taken by one of blu’s new pieces in Italy. Blu is known for not doing work by halves…but rather having large or complex animations and drawings that make you wonder how he didn’t get caught in the process.
This latest piece looks at first glance like a huge cake on the side of a very large building, but closer inspection reveals the true nature of this ‘baked good’.
Filled with rubbish and litter, the ‘cake’ is topped with grass and trees. The area this piece is displayed, Grottaglie, has in recent years unwillingly become home to a dump and appears to be in line to receive even more of Italy’s sloppy seconds. Protests seem to be falling on deaf ears and the powers that be appear unconcerned to halt what is going on. Thus this cake..is one that truly turns the stomach. Such a great commentary and execution – I wish I could travel to see it in person. In the meantime, enjoy what you can of it online at the Fame Festival site.
