The {gastro} pains of being an expat..

Sunday Roast

There are many speed bumps one comes up against in life, some not as varied and complex as that of being an expat. People often think it’s straightforward and easy living in a, let’s face it, ‘foreign’ country – as I believe anything but home is nowt but ‘foreign’. But in every way it is different – physically, mentally, olfactively and yes gastronomically. Tastebuds, like olfactive memories are there to stay – all you need is a trigger of a taste and you are transported back to that place and time when things were more like home.

So, it’s fair to say I was besides myself this past week when I received a care package from home, containing, amongst other things a box of Paxo Sage and Onion Stuffing and some Bisto Veggie gravy. There is only one thing this can mean – a Sunday Roast. So this past weekend the above was my dinner – and it made my tastebuds dance with joy. Roast New England potatoes, Morningstar Chik’n strips, steamed veggies, stuffings all drowned in veggie gravy. Subtle not salty flavours, smooth creamy gravy, crunchy tipped stuffing – it was so good I felt my heart rate slowly and surely increase with each and every bite. Ahhh home. Thy name is Paxo.
