You’re pretty..now bake.

One would never dream of saying the above to someone whom they’d just started a relationship with. But Dustin Wayne Harris isn’t just anyone. The artist is currently preparing to close his exhibit ‘Cake Mixx’ at the Heist Gallery in the L.E.S. A rather humourous yet, in my opinion, realistic analysis that Harris conducted on girlfriends past, wherein he requested they ‘bake a cake’ for him, from which he judged the stature of their impending relationship.

Harris explains his inspiration for “Cake Mixx” as such, “After a first date with someone, I ask her to bake me a cake. I give no direction, but the way the cake looks never fails to become a metaphor for the relationship. I am convinced that I have stumbled on a valuable tool in the arsenal pf psychoanalysis: cake reading.”

Harris makes a good point, there is much to say about the care, attention, ingredients and presentation of the food someone serves you. It reveals something about them as a person, how they think, create, feel; not to mention how they feel about you. Thus this somewhat simple domestic task that Harris has exacted on the women in his life has tricked them into revealing more about themselves than they would probably willingly verbalise so early in the relationship.

Having documented and publicly exhibited these ‘cakes’ at Heist Gallery, Harris work can be seen until April 17th. But don’t fret, the project will be appearing in issue no. 7 of Dear Dave magazine if you aren’t able to go see the work in person. If you do drop by the gallery on April 17th prepare for a treat, special guest Max Blagg will also be present to perform readings of his recent poetry inspired by Harris’ images.
